It’s Me, Hi
Hello! I am a senior at UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media! No, wait… a U.S. Air Force veteran! Hmm, maybe that’s a bit much…
I’m an artist, or a is story teller better? Um…
a Foodie? Adventurer? World Traveler?
Hello, I’m Chris Bryant.
No, not the baseball player, he spells it different. And no, definitely not the UK politician who took pictures in his whitey tighties.
I’m… me.
So, what sets me apart from them? How are you supposed to sum up who you are as a person? What sides of yourself do you want show the world? What is my brand?
Last fall I took an Intro to Advertising and Public Relations class. My professor at the time said “Stick with me, and I’ll teach you how to get a job.” It was a bold claim, but as an older student going back to school for a career change, I’d take all of the help that I could get. So, I enrolled in his “Branding of Me” class. I half expected a resume review and some generic interview tips, but the first day we were asked to define who we are. If we can’t define ourselves, then how can we expect anyone to pick us out of a stack of resumes. The class was full of designers, journalists, marketers, copywriters and publicists. Yet, while we were all creatives and knew how to sell other people, how would we sell ourselves?
Step 1: Avoid the phrase “I am.” (Oops. So much for that one.)
Step 2: Find your passions
Step 3: Write
So, in this semester long series, I am going to discuss my passions, along with some random topics that I find interesting, and just some of my day to day adventures.
And hopefully, by the end of my journey I can say “Hello, I’m Chris Bryant. Yes, The Chris Bryant.”
